IDT Membership Directory

The Imaging, Diagnostics, and Therapeutics (IDT) Program is a new Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) program specifically organized to facilitate the development and validation of imaging, diagnostics, and therapeutic approaches for cancer applications. The IDT Program draws from resources within Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) and leverages the existing strengths of the University of Utah (U of U) in genetics, pharmaceutics, and imaging. Program membership, scientific expertise and interests, and goals are specifically aligned with the vision of making individualized oncology a reality. IDT Program goals include the following:

  • Provide new approaches to individualized cancer diagnosis and therapy by developing new imaging techniques, diagnostics, and therapeutics, including image-guided and targeted drug delivery systems
  • Foster bidirectional translation of discoveries between the laboratory and the clinic by developing collaborations and scientific synergy among Cancer Center Program members
  • Better understand unmet clinical needs in cancer through collaboration and interaction with HCI Multidisciplinary Disease Groups
  • Advance theoretical and preclinical projects toward human applications in collaborative research projects
  • Develop and execute investigator-initiated imaging, diagnostic, and therapeutic clinical trials to establish new treatments for patients

The expertise of its 43 members, in 15 different departments from the colleges of Science, Pharmacy, Medicine, and Engineering, provides for truly cross-disciplinary research in cancer.

The IDT Program has been organized into three thematic areas based on the membership’s scientific interests and expertise and the vision of the Program and Cancer Center as a whole.

Imaging: use of molecular imaging and image-guided therapy to improve diagnosis, therapy, and clinical care

Diagnostics: development of novel diagnostic strategies for cancer characterization to improve therapies and to provide prognostic information to improve clinical care

Therapeutics: development of novel drugs and drug delivery systems, involving preclinical development, pharmacology, and clinical trials, both sponsored and investigator-initiated

The three thematic areas of scientific interest and expertise in the IDT Program facilitate linking basic science to clinical oncology with the resulting outcome of a significant programmatic interest in investigator-initiated trials for imaging, diagnostics, and therapeutics. The Program structure also facilitates the use of CCSG Shared Resources to improve the quality of cancer-related research and clinical trials performed by IDT Program members.

The IDT Program currently has approximately $7.2 million per year of direct research support from the NCI, other NIH institutes, the American Cancer Society and other funding agencies. Cancer-focused articles published between 2003 and 2009 total 466, 15% being interprogrammatic and 17% being intraprogrammatic publications.
