James McGreevy, MD, is a professor of surgery and program director of general surgery residency at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is also a member of the Cancer Center Support Grant’s Experimental Diagnostics and Therapeutics Program at Huntsman Cancer Institute.

McGreevy’s research interests align with those of Charles Grissom, PhD, with the Department of Chemistry at the University of Utah. Together they study novel tumor markers using vitamin B12-related compounds to deliver fluorescent markers into rapidly dividing cells. This technology aims to reduce the high rate of positive margins in breast cancer lumpectomy and to improve sentinel node identification for breast cancer patients. The University Technology Commercialization Office has supported the research with several grants, resulting in the organization of a spin-off company, Vestan Medical Imaging, with McGreevy as President and CEO.

McGreevy received his MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine followed by an internship in general surgery and a residency in general, thoracic, and vascular surgery at the University Health Center of Pittsburgh. During his residency, McGreevy completed a research fellowship with the Department of Surgery at the University of Utah. He then completed a fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh as the chief administrative resident.

McGreevy is an active member of the Air Force Reserve and commander of the 419th Medical Squadron at Hill Air Force Base. He is a senior flight surgeon with more than 750 hours logged in the F-16.
