Huntsman Cancer Institute is looking for compassionate, caring, and
understanding volunteers to assist staff, patients and patient's
families. Volunteers need to be reliable, committed to their volunteer
service, and be available on a regular basis. Volunteers in positions
that must be regularly attended are asked to work at least one four-hour
shift each week for a minimum of six months. Cancer survivors and family
members of cancer survivors must be one year out of treatment before
applying for a volunteer position.
What We Ask of Volunteers
An application, two letters of reference, personal
interview and orientation are required for all volunteer positions except
for certain fundraising and auxiliary positions. Volunteers must sign a
confidentiality agreement, receive a satisfactory result of a criminal
background check, and get an annual tuberculosis screening, provided by
HCI. Volunteers are asked to be discreet in their interactions with
patients, respecting confidential information. Volunteers are also
asked to attend quarterly inservice meetings.
After placement, position-specific training is required. Placement
is based on availability, time commitment and interest. Volunteers may
be cross-trained to work in a variety of positions.
Orientation
Volunteers are informed about
confidentiality, health, and safety issues. During orientation
volunteers sign a confidentiality agreement and obtain instructions
on how to pick up their HCI volunteer uniform and name badge, both
of which are provided free of charge. Additional information is
provided during orientation to help volunteers better understand
their role as a volunteer at Huntsman Cancer Institute.
