1. What do you look for in a volunteer?

Huntsman Cancer Institute is looking for caring, dependable, and committed individuals who are flexible in accepting assignments. We have many opportunities for you to serve and will match your skills and interests with an appropriate type of service.

2. What type of commitment must I make?

Many volunteer positions require a commitment of at least one four-hour shift each week for a minimum of six months.

3. What if I am sick or go on vacation and can't come in?

Volunteers go on vacations and must miss work because of illness. We understand and ask that you notify volunteer services and your placement area if you must miss a shift.

4. How do I apply to volunteer?

Print out the online application or request an application from Volunteer Services at (801) 581-7169, or by email at volunteerServices@hci.utah.edu.

5. What is required to become volunteers?

Volunteers are required to fill out an application, provide two letters of reference, have a personal interview and attend orientation. The orientation provides instruction on patient confidentiality, health and safety issues, and specific information regarding your role as a volunteer. You will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement and pass a criminal background check. There are certain health requirements that need to be met. We also ask that volunteers have updated immunizations and undergo an annual tuberculosis-screening test, provided free of charge. HCI will provide free uniforms and name badges for all volunteers.

6. Where will I park my car?

Free parking is provided in HCI's parking terrace. See Map for driving instructions.

7. What type of training will I receive?

Orientation to Huntsman Cancer Institute and assignment-specific training are provided for volunteers. Information about confidentiality and health and safety issues will also be addressed.

8. What benefits will I receive?

Volunteers have an opportunity to gain invaluable experience, uncover hidden potential and work in an atmosphere that has some of the worlds most renowned cancer professionals. Volunteers are included in Huntsman Cancer Institute events including the annual picnic, receive free covered parking, and a meal voucher for each four-hour shift worked.

9. Do I need a physical examination before working as a volunteer?

No physical exam is required, but volunteers must have a TB test within the last year. If documentation is unavailable, you will be required to have a skin test, provided free of charge.
