The Bureau of Vital Records from the Utah Department
of Health provides a number of data sets to the Utah Population
Database (UPDB). Many of these are updated annually.
Birth Certificates
Information from Utah birth certificates is
available for two sets of data: 1915 to 1921 and 1947 to the present.
- Parents are matched across birth records
to create reproductive histories for mothers and fathers
- 91,811 births from 1915-1921, 73 percent
of births and 78 percent of their parents link with one or more
other records in the UPDB (primarily genealogy records)
- About 2.2 million births from 1947 to
the present
- From 1947 to the present, 81 percent of births
(excluding age <16) and 88 percent of their parents link to
another record
- 7,790 fetal deaths from 1978 to 2006, 93 percent of parents link to another record
Death Certificates
Information from Utah death certificates is
available from 1904 to the present.
- 1904 to 1956: Cause of death is available
as a literal field; it has been coded to ICD Revision 10, using
the 2000 Medical Data System and supplemented by hand coding
- 1957 to the present: Cause of death is available
as ICD codes by the Department of Health
- Industry and occupation of the deceased are
classified using 1990 census codes
- All individuals listed on a death certificate
are used to identify all matching individuals. Not including Social
Security Death Index, 75 percent of the decedents, 66 percent
of the parents and 65 percent of the spouses match to other records
in UPDB
- For the most recent year of death, 99 percent
decedents linked to one or more other records in UPDB and 84 percent
have family information
Marriage Records
- 1978 to 1988 records have minimal computerized
information, listing husband and wife name and age, marriage date,
and county of marriage.
- After 1988, records have more complete information
for the husband and wife, including birth date and birth place,
education, number of marriages, and type of marriage (civil or
religious).
- 90 percent of individuals named on marriage
records link to another record which is not a divorce or marriage
record.
Divorce Records
- 1978 to 1988 records have minimal computerized
information, listing husband and wife name, marriage and divorce
dates, and county where the divorce was issued.
- After 1988, records have more complete information,
including birth dates and education of the husband and wife, number
of marriages, number of children, and number of children under
age 18.
- 74 percent of individuals named on divorce
records link to another record which is not a divorce or marriage
record.
