Inpatient Hospital Claims

Utah Inpatient Discharge data. For any state, the hospital discharge data system is a database containing statewide, population-based healthcare information associated with all hospitals in a state. In Utah 53 hospitals have submitted their discharge data to the Utah Department of Health (UDOH).

  • Claims data represent patient events in the hospital
  • Data are available in UPDB beginning with1996
  • Each record contains identifying information (for record linking by PPR staff), demographic information, hospital code, principal diagnosis and principal procedure codes, eight (maximum) other diagnosis and other procedure codes, an external injury E-code, admit and discharge information, mortality risk codes, and payer category
  • More than 75 percent of these records have been linked to an individual within the UPDB. One or more inpatient events are recorded for 1.1 million individuals with records in UPDB
  • The activity of linking these records creates health histories of inpatient events for individuals.

University of Utah Health Sciences Center

Beginning in 2003, a new research tool was created for investigators studying the familiality of disease: a link between the medical information contained in the University of Utah Health Sciences Center (UUHSC) Data Resource Center and the family history information in the UPDB. This resource covers hospitals and out patients clinics associated with the University of Utah.

  • The UUHSC Data Resource Center maintains a data warehouse with medical information on more than 1.8 million patient records
  • More than 1.3 million (73 percent) demographic records from the UUHSC have been matched to a “person record” in UPDB
  • Neither the patient demographic records nor the medical information from the UUHSC are incorporated into the UPDB; each resource maintains its own data
  • The medical data and UPDB records can be accessed at the time that a research-specific project has been approved. Access to the link file is limited to research only and is governed by the Resource for Genetic and Epidemiologic Research (RGE)

Intermountain Healthcare
Beginning in 2008, a research infrastructure between Intermountain Healthcare and UPDB was created. Intermountain Healthcare is a not-for-profit health care delivery system of hospitals, clinics, and employed physician groups covering Utah and southeastern Idaho. Several of the small hospital and clinics are the only source of care in some rural Utah communities.

  • Intermountain Healthcare maintains a data warehouse with medical information on more than 5.6 million patients
  • More than 3.4 million (61%) demographic records from Intermountain have been matched to a “person record” in UPDB
  • Neither the patient demographic records nor the medical information from Intermountain Healthcare are incorporated into the UPDB; each resource maintains its own data.
  • The medical data and UPDB records can be accessed at the time that a research-specific project has been approved. Access to the link file is limited to research only and is governed by the Resource for Genetic and Epidemiologic Research (RGE) and the Intermountain IRB
