What began –and continues– as a goal to understand the roles of the nuclear pore protein Nup153 at both interphase and mitosis has led us to an interest in how nuclear envelope breakdown is coordinated with other cell cycle events. It has also led us to broader questions about how cell division is executed and regulated. Ultimately, we would like to use this information to gain insight into both origins of cancerous cell growth as well as targets for new chemotherapeutic strategies to block cell proliferation.
