Katie Ullman
Associate Professor, Department of Oncological Sciences
Investigator, Huntsman Cancer Institute
Katharine.Ullman@hci.utah.edu

Katie grew up in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area and received a B.A. from Northwestern University in 1986. She then attended Stanford University for her Ph.D. studies --focused on transcription in activated T cells under the guidance of Jerry Crabtree. Katie joined Douglass Forbes’ group at UCSD for her post-doctoral fellowship and became immersed in trying to understand the nuclear pore complex. In 1996 she received a Career Award from Burroughs Wellcome and joined the faculty at the University of Utah in 1998. Katie was named a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Scholar in 2005.

Suzanne Elgort
Senior Research Specialist/ Lab Manager
Suzanne.Elgort@hci.utah.edu
Suzanne received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from UC San Diego in 1994 and worked in the biotech industry in San Diego for over 6 years. Suzanne joined the Ullman lab in 2002. Her current research examines the regulation of Nup153 function during the mammalian cell cycle. In addition to her project, Suzanne is also responsible for general lab organization and for keeping things running smoothly. Suzanne’s interests and hobbies include rock climbing, spending time with her two pups, and more climbing with her accident-prone husband.

KinHoe Chow
PhD Candidate
Kin-hoe.chow@hci.utah.edu
KinHoe, originally from Malaysia, received his bachelor degree in 2003 at Mississippi State University where he stayed to do research in Justin Courcelle’s lab (see JBC 279:3492). He joined the Molecular Biology Graduate Program here in 2004 and his current thesis project focuses in elucidating the contributions of the Nup153 zinc finger domain to nuclear envelope breakdown. In particular, he is looking at how the recruitment of COPI is regulated. KinHoe received a predoctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association.

Doug Mackay
Postdoctoral Fellow
douglas.mackay@hci.utah.edu
Doug grew up in the Salt Lake area and graduated with his Bachelor Degree in Biology from the University of Utah in 2000. He then relocated to Irvine, CA, where he completed his graduate work in the lab of Xing Dai at UC-Irvine, studying transcriptional regulation during embryonic development. Doug started working in the Ullman lab in the Fall of 2005 with an emphasis on developing a live imaging assay that will allow us to monitor the kinetics of NEBD in real-time. This assay will be used to discover additional proteins that are involved in NEBD. Doug was awarded the Michael Schmidt Postdoctoral Fellowship from the American Cancer Society in January 2007. Doug is married and has twins (boy and girl) who keep him very busy when he is not at work.

Matt Powers
PhD Candidate
matthew.powers@hci.utah.edu
Matt graduated from University of Texas, El Paso in 2000 with a BS in Microbiology. He worked in the lab of Dr. Max Summers at Texas A&M University for over two years studying integral membrane protein trafficking using baculovirus infection models. Matt entered the University of Utah graduate school in 2003 and is now studying aspects of mRNA export. In his spare time Matt enjoys fiddling around with the guitar and piano, making a mess with clay, hiking, skiing and running.

Craig Elder
Undergraduate student/Lab Aide
craig.elder@hci.utah.edu
He’s back! Craig is an undergrad at the University of Utah (as of Fall 2006) and is majoring in biology. He is from South Jordan, Utah and graduated from Bingham High School. He was a summer intern in our lab in 2003 while in high school. Craig speaks fluent Spanish and loves to travel, wakeboard, snow ski, camp and anything that includes the outdoors, whatever the season. We also hear he’s got a secret family recipe for a mean coke-butt ham, although some of us wonder if there is such a thing.

Bora Jang
Undergraduate student/Lab Aide
borajang@hotmail.com
Bora is from South Korea and spent some time in San Diego as an exchange student in high school. Now a Biology major at the U, she joined us in September 2007 as a volunteer lab aide and plans to pursue an independent research project under the guidance of KinHoe.

Masaki Makise
Postdoctoral fellow
Masaki.makise@hci.utah.edu
Masaki is from Japan and started working in the Ullman lab in April 2008. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Okayama University in 2003 and then worked for four years at Kumamoto University as a postdoctoral fellow and staff member. Masaki’s previous research was focused on the initiation step of DNA replication (except in 1999, when he worked at a soy sauce company…). Masaki’s current project is aimed at elucidating the downstream consequences of perturbing Nup153 function. Masaki loves chatting with his wife while drinking shochu; little did he know that this alcoholic beverage is not widely available outside of Asia…
Marta Fay
PhD Candidate
Marta.fay@hci.utah.edu
Marta grew up in various places around the state of Washington and attended the University of Oregon with a year abroad at the University of Bristol. After receiving a BS in Biochemistry in 2005, she taught English in Thailand for six months and then worked as a technician for John Scott at Oregon Health and Science University. She entered the Molecular Biology Graduate Program here in 2007 and joined our lab in the summer of 2008. Her research focuses on a new project that involves understanding how translation is regulated. When she is not in the lab, Marta likes to hike, run, travel, and is learning to ski.

Debbi Hamner
Administrative Assistant
Debbi.Hamner@hci.utah.edu
Debbi Hamner joined the Huntsman Cancer Institute in May 2005 and is the administrative assistant for the Beckerle, Moghal, and Ullman Labs. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Debbi has worked for the University of Utah for over eight years in Public Safety and Naval Science, and is excited to now be a part of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. When taking a break from the challenge of keeping us organized, Debbi enjoys sports and gardening.
