DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES

Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) offers a variety of diagnostic imaging and procedural techniques. These include computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography-CT (PET-CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Biopsy and pathology analysis confirm imaging results and help determine the best treatment plan.

TREATMENT PLANNING CONFERENCES

Members of the Sarcoma Service team review each new case in weekly multidisciplinary treatment planning conferences. HCI’s nationally recognized pathologists, radiologists, surgeons, and oncologists determine individualized treatment plans that specifically address each patient’s needs.

TREATMENT SERVICES

If tests show that you have a sarcoma, we offer a variety of treatment options, including the following:

• Surgery removes the tumor and affected tissues, with an emphasis on techniques that preserve function.
• Chemotherapy drugs kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.
• Radiation therapy uses focused beams of radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.
• Interventional radiology delivers cancer therapy using minimally invasive image-guided procedures.

Radiation and chemotherapy can be given before or after surgery. Your doctor may recommend one of these approaches, or a combination of them, depending on your type of cancer and the extent of the tumor’s growth and stage. HCI’s physicians work with your personal physician to assure continuity of care.
