To optimize patient care, the members of HCI Sarcoma
Service review all cases at our weekly interdisciplinary
tumor board (conference). In collaboration with our
recognized pathologists and radiologists, we carefully
study each new patient. Studies performed at outside
institutions are retrieved and personally assessed. This
prevents unnecessary repetition of studies and also
permits us to confirm the original studies' validity.
The Sarcoma Service, at HCI, because of its experience
in sarcomas, is continually developing and refining
institutional based treatment plans to improve the
outcome in these rare but highly malignant conditions. We
are also major participants in national co-operative
studies. Our physicians are members in many national and
international committees and societies dedicated to the
management of the sarcoma family of tumors. Affiliations
include the National Cancer Institute, National
Comprehensive Cancer Network, Children's Oncology Group,
Southwestern Oncology Group, and Connective Tissue
Oncology Society, among others.
Every Monday, at HCI, we hold our Adult Sarcoma
Clinic. Children and adolescents are seen at our
Pediatric Sarcoma Clinic, held at Primary Children's
Medical Center every Tuesday. Adult and pediatric clinics
are staffed by the same core group of physicians from
several disciplines. This crossover of doctors
facilitates the care of the adolescent and young adult.
Furthermore, as our younger patients grow up, they can
generally continue to see the same physician in our adult
clinic. We believe this to be very important as the
continuity of care by the same core group of physicians
makes for better health care.
