Medical specialists
The Brain, Spine, and Skull Base Cancer Program team
includes physicians and a nurse practitioner as well as these specialists:
Neuro-oncologists
A neuro-oncologist is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating brain tumors. They are either an oncologist who received specific training in brain and central nervous system tumors or a neurologist who specializes in oncology.
After a diagnosis is made the neuro-oncologist will work with the patient to map out a treatment plan. This may include chemotherapy, surgery performed by a neurosurgeon, radiation treatment given by a radiation oncologist, or a combination of these treatments.
Radiation Oncologists
A radiation oncologist is a physician who specializes in oncology, the physics of radiation, and the treatment of cancer through the use of radiation.
The main types of radiation treatments for patients with brain, spine, and skull base tumors are whole brain radiation, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic radiotherapy.

Neurosurgeons
A neurosurgeon specializes in surgeries of the central nervous system. This includes the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord. Our neurosurgeons specialize in malignant tumors and non-malignant tumors called meningiomas. In addition, they work in conjunction with radiation oncologists in stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic radiotherapy treatments.
