Scientists workding in lab The Tom C. Mathews Jr. Familial Melanoma Research Clinic (FMRC) is a translational clinic, which means that it spans the clinical and research aspects of the Melanoma Program. Under the direction of Sancy Leachman, MD, PhD, this clinic is designed to study patients who have a familial predisposition toward developing melanoma.

The primary goal of this clinic is to enroll familial melanoma patients who are willing to participate in research. The non-fee-for-service format allows epidemiological data, blood, and tissue samples to be collected from patients so that researchers can investigate the molecular causes for the predisposition to melanoma. It also allows the clinic to provide a thorough skin examination and medical and genetic education to this extremely high-risk population of patients.

The Tom C. Mathews Jr. estate made a $2 million donation to melanoma and skin cancer research at Huntsman Cancer Institute. This generous donation helps fund the Tom C. Mathews Jr. Familial Melanoma Research Clinic within the Melanoma Program.
