C. elegans Worm Facility

The C. elegans Worm Core Facility facilitates research that uses the worm as a model organism to study gene function. Its staff provides consultation and training for laboratories new to the worm field and to experienced worm laboratory personnel who may wish to gain technical expertise or help with experimental design.

The facility’s Gene Function Pilot Program helps non-worm laboratories assess the usefulness of C. elegans for their research. It offers researchers quick and cost-efficient data on gene function and expression patterns using RNA interference (RNAi) analysis and expression patterns using transgenic worms that express fluorescent protein-tagged genes.

As well as performing experiments for individual laboratories, the Worm Core Facility provides technical training in the following areas for researchers who prefer to perform their own experiments:

• general worm culture
• genetic crosses
• mutant screens
• microinjection
• ballistic transformation
• cell identification
• cell culture from disrupted embryos
• RNAi analysis
