Joseph Simone, MD, is clinical director emeritus of Huntsman Cancer Institute. Since his retirement in 2001, he has served in an advisory capacity, providing direction for the development and enhancement of clinical and research programs. During his tenure at the University of Utah, he was the Jon M. Huntsman Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine and assistant vice president for cancer programs.

From 1992 to 1996, Simone served as physician-in-chief of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. While there, he developed a cancer disease management system and a regional clinical cancer network to help cancer care providers share information and best practices.

Before joining Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Simone spent 25 years at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, where he played a leadership role in the development of curative treatments for childhood leukemia and lymphoma. From 1983 to 1992, he was director of St. Jude, implementing both a scientific renewal and major growth in the physical facilities of the center.

Simone received his medical degree from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University in Chicago in 1960, completed his residency in internal medicine at Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital, and was a fellow in pediatric hematology at the University of Illinois Research and Educational Hospitals, both also located in Chicago. His distinguished career has included appointments to prestigious cancer policy-making organizations, including service as medical director and chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, president of the Association of American Cancer Institutes, vice chair of the Pediatric Oncology Group, and membership on the Board of Scientific Advisors of the National Cancer Institute.

Simone has received numerous awards and honors, including the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award of the American Association for Cancer Research and the Award of Excellence from the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
